Kanab & Kane County

Kanab is a straight run from our yard through Colorado City and Fredonia. We’re on that road anyway.

Kanab, UT

Local crew, local ground.

Kanab is the Kane County seat and the hub for everything from Orderville to the Arizona line. It is about an hour from Apple Valley, and the route runs straight through Colorado City and Fredonia, which happen to be two other places we work.

The ground around Kanab is largely sandy soil over sandstone, with the Vermilion Cliffs above town. Sandy ground digs easy and trenches badly, so shoring and proper bedding matter more here than people expect.

What is different about working in Kanab

  • Sandy soil trenches easily but sloughs; bedding and backfill technique matter more than the digging.
  • Sandstone shows up shallow near the cliffs and benches, which changes the equipment.
  • Septic permits go through the Southwest Utah Public Health Department, Kane County office at (435) 296-5477.
  • Some Kane County parcels also need Utah prairie dog habitat clearance from the Division of Wildlife Resources before you dig.
  • Higher and colder than St. George, so water line depth requirements are not the same.

FAQ

Questions we get from Kanab

Do you really come out to Kanab?

Yes. It is about an hour from Apple Valley and the drive goes right through Colorado City and Fredonia, where we already work.

Who issues septic permits in Kane County?

The Southwest Utah Public Health Department, Kane County office at (435) 296-5477. Same agency as Washington County, different office.

What is the prairie dog clearance I keep hearing about?

Some parcels in Kane and Garfield counties sit in Utah prairie dog habitat and need clearance from the Division of Wildlife Resources before ground is disturbed. Your designer or the county will tell you if your lot is affected.

Is the ground different from St. George?

Yes. More sand, more sandstone, higher elevation and colder winters, which changes trench depth and how a trench has to be shored and bedded.
