Kane County, UT

What the ground does here.

Kane County runs east from the Washington County line along the Arizona border, with Kanab as the county seat and Long Valley stretching north up Highway 89 through Orderville and Glendale. It is about an hour from our yard, and the drive goes through Colorado City and Fredonia where we already work.

Outside the town cores, nearly everything here is on septic and well, which makes the soil test the first real step on any new lot.

What to plan for in Kane County

  • Sandy soil over sandstone digs easily and trenches badly, so bedding and shoring technique matter.
  • Higher elevation and colder winters than the St. George basin, which changes water line depth.
  • Septic permits go through the Southwest Utah Public Health Department, Kane County office at (435) 296-5477.
  • Some parcels need Utah prairie dog habitat clearance from the Division of Wildlife Resources before ground is disturbed.
  • Long driveways and long utility runs from the highway are the norm, not the exception.
